Use voices, audio, and captions
Choose who speaks and understand the audio controls in your video.
Reviewed
Your video's sound has up to four parts: speech, background music, sound effects, and captions. This guide shows where each one is set.
Decide who speaks
Start in Video Story. Your input decides where the speech comes from:
- From an idea: the app writes the spoken lines.
- From a script: your script has the lines.
- From audio: your recording is the speech.
For an idea, choose under Voiceover:
- Auto: the app chooses the speakers.
- Narrator only: narration, no character dialogue.
- Narrator + characters: narration and dialogue.
- Characters only: dialogue, no narrator.
- No voices: no spoken lines. Music and sound effects can still play.
The choices depend on your plan and on the universe.
Choose the voices
- Use Choose voice to pick the narrator, where the universe allows it. Listen to the preview when there is one.
- Each saved character has its own Voice setting. Open the character in Characters to change it. The narrator voice does not change the characters' voices.
- With a script, the script decides who speaks. Edit the lines to change the speakers. See the script guide for narrator lines, character handles, and silent shots.
- Some universes have voiceover turned off. Their videos have no voices, so the Voiceover choice is not shown, and a script for them must not have spoken lines. The create page tells you, and it does not start the video until you remove those lines. In a universe you own, open its Your universe page, open Settings, then Narration and audio. The Include Voiceover switch there turns voices on.
- To add a voice from a share link, see Add your own voice.
Use your recording or song
- In Video Story, choose From audio for recorded narration. Upload the file and check the file name and the duration. The app shows any file or length limits. Some universes do not allow audio input.
- For a song, use Music Video. The video is built around your track.
Set captions
- In Video Story, open More Settings and check Captions before you generate.
- In a universe you own, Settings, then Narration and audio, sets the caption defaults, style, and position.
- In the editor, the Captions control changes the caption style. Select Render & Download video again to apply it.
Review the sound in the editor
- Play the video and check speech, music, sound effects, and caption timing together.
- On a continuous shot with a Voice control: Dub plays your chosen character voices. Original plays the clip's own recorded performance and mutes the dubbed lines and the sound effects for that shot.
- Check names, pronunciation, caption text, and volume before you export.
- Listen to the whole video, not only one shot.
