Use universes and consistent characters
Build a reusable world and choose the characters for each story.
Reviewed
A universe gives your videos a shared starting point: its world, its rules, a visual style, and other settings. A saved character gives you the same person or creature in every story. Use both when you want a series with a familiar look and cast.
These settings guide the result. They do not make every face, outfit, or shot identical. Review the images and the video before you publish.
Start with an existing universe
- Open Universes. You will see Popular this month (universes where at least 3 people made public videos in the last 30 days), New universes, LongStories Universes and Featured Community Universes. Your Universes appears when you have made your own.
- To find a universe by its name or description, type in Search by name or description and select Search. The search covers every public universe.
- Select a universe card to open the universe's page. It shows the universe's description, its characters, places and objects, ideas to try, its series and the videos people made in it.
- Select Make a video in and the universe's name, or tap an idea. The creation screen opens in that universe. You can also select Create a Video on a card to go straight there.
- Check the settings shown before you generate. Some universes limit which inputs and choices are available.
- For a one-off video that belongs to no world, choose Open universe on the creation screen.
Use a universe's cast
When you make a video in a universe that has a cast, the characters, places and objects step opens on the universe's cast: its characters, places and objects on one line, with the universe's name. They are already selected, so your video uses them.
- Tap a selected tile to leave it out of this video. Tap it again to put it back.
- To add your own, select Your library above the line and tap the ones you want. Select the cast button to go back.
- Browse all opens everything with filters. Choose From and the universe's name in the filter to see only its cast.
- In some universes the owner allows Only its cast. Then only the universe's characters, places and objects are shown. The story can still have people in the background.
- The bar at the bottom and the summary before you generate show which characters come from the universe's cast.
- You can use the cast of any public universe, also when someone else made it. You cannot edit those characters, places or objects.
- For a series, start each video in the same universe. Each video starts with the same cast.
- To continue a story, select Next episode on a finished video. When you start a new video with the cast of one of your series, the page offers to make it the next episode.
- You can make the next episode From an idea, From a script or From audio. It stays the next episode while the episode card shows above these choices, with the same cast, places and look. A script or audio you bring is the episode's story; the earlier episodes only keep the characters, places and look the same.
- To make a video that is not part of the series, select Make it a new video instead on the episode card. From music opens the music video page, and a music video is not an episode.
- A video becomes episode 1 of a series when you make its next episode, not when you open the page. Series shows a series once it has two episodes.
Add or remove an episode in a series
Open Series and select the series.
- Add a video: select the Add a video tile, pick one of your finished videos, then select Add as episode and the number. It becomes the next episode, and the next episode you make continues its story. You can add a video made in the same universe as the series that is not in another series yet. To add an episode of another series, remove it from that series first.
- Remove an episode: select the ⋯ button on the episode, then Remove from series, then confirm. The video stays in My Videos. The episodes after it move up one number, and the next episode does not continue its story. When a series you started with Next episode has one episode left, it leaves your Series list until it has two again; you stay on its page, so you can add a video in its place. When you remove the last episode, the series is removed too.
- You cannot remove an episode while an episode of the series is being made. Wait until it is ready. In a series you planned from a universe, you also cannot add a video then.
- In a planned series, a removed episode is not made again. If a planned episode failed, try it again or select Skip it first.
Share your universe
Open your universe's page and select Share. On a phone, the share menu opens; on a computer, the link is copied. Anyone with the link can see the page of a public universe, also without an account. A private universe's page opens only for you.
The page never shows your Lore, Rules, Art direction, Audience, or how each character fits. It shows the name, the public description, the pictures, and the names and pictures of the characters, places and objects you linked. Your username shows on the page only when your profile is public.
Build your own universe
Open Create Universe. It has two steps:
-
Your universe: give it a name and fill in Describe your universe: the world, who lives in it, and what happens in its videos. One line is enough; more is better, up to 10,000 characters. Choose Public or Private. You can also open these parts now, or add them later:
- Characters, Places and Objects: add some from your library, or select Create new. For each one, answer How does it fit in this universe?, for example "the main character" or "where every episode ends".
- Who it's for: Kids, Teens, Adults or Everyone. Skip it and the AI chooses from your description.
-
Style: choose one of two ways to go on:
- Pick a style: select one of the styles in the list. Your own saved styles with pictures are in the list too.
- Let AI choose: the AI reads your universe and picks one style from the same list when it creates the universe.
Either way, every video in the universe uses that one style. You can change it later in Settings. To make a new style, or to select Let AI decide for a new look in each video, open Settings, then Visuals. See Choose a visual style.
Select Create my universe. In about 30 seconds the AI writes, from what you gave it, the universe's public description, Lore, Rules, Art direction, Audience (when you did not choose one) and three example ideas. Then your universe opens on its Your universe page. Read it, change anything you like, and select Make my first video.
You do not choose a narrator when you create a universe. Each video picks who narrates. To set a narrator voice for the whole universe, open Settings, then Narration and audio.
The universe's pictures appear a few minutes after it opens. You do not need to reload: the top of the page shows Drawing your pictures until they are ready.
Your universe's pictures
A universe has two pictures: the cover, the wide picture at the top of its page and on its card, and the profile picture, the round picture next to its name. They are drawn in your universe's style, with your cast: the first characters in your Cast, and your first place. The first character in your Cast is on the profile picture. A universe without a cast gets a picture of its world.
When the pictures are ready, the top of your Your universe page shows three covers and a profile picture. The marked cover is on now. Select another one to use it, then select Done.
At the top of the page you can also:
- Select New covers to get three new covers.
- Select Redraw with a note and write what should change, for example "at night, with Mia in front". You get a new version of your current cover to use or not.
- Select Upload a cover to use your own picture (PNG, JPEG or WebP, up to 15 MB).
- Select Earlier pictures to go back to a picture you had before. Every picture is kept.
- Select the camera button on the round picture for a New profile picture or to Upload a profile picture.
When you change the style or the cast and select Save, the page asks if you want new pictures in the new style. Select Redraw pictures, or Not now to keep your pictures.
If only some pictures could be drawn, the ready ones stay: pick one, or ask for new ones. If no picture could be drawn, select Try again. You can ask for new pictures up to 10 times an hour.
What pictures cost
The first pictures of a new universe are free. If they could not be drawn, Try again is free too.
Every new drawing after that costs credits for each picture. The button shows the price next to the coin icon before you select it. With most universes a picture costs 8 credits:
- New covers (three covers): 24 credits.
- New profile picture: 8 credits.
- Redraw with a note: 8 credits.
- Redraw pictures after a change of style or cast (three covers and a profile picture): 32 credits.
- Try again after a later drawing failed: the same price again.
If a picture cannot be drawn, you get its credits back. Uploading your own picture and going back to an earlier picture are free. If your balance is too low, the app opens a window to add credits instead. See Buy more credits.
The Your universe page
Open your universe's page and select Edit, or select Edit Universe on its card. Only you see the parts marked Private. Every new video in the universe follows them.
- Pictures: the cover and the profile picture. See Your universe's pictures.
- Name and Public description: everyone sees these on the universe's card and page. Keep your Rules and secrets out of the description.
- Style: the style every video in the universe uses, with its picture. Select Change it in Settings to pick another one.
- Lore: the main text about your world. Up to 6,000 characters. The AI writes it in short parts: the world and its places, who lives there, what every video gives the viewer, the kinds of stories that happen there, things that come back in many videos, and the tone. Even from one line it adds ideas you can keep, change or delete.
- Rules: things no video may ever break, one per line, such as "Kiro never speaks words."
- Art direction: colors, light, camera, and what never appears. It works with the visual style you pick.
- Audience: who the videos are for.
- Cast: the characters, places and objects of this universe, and how each one fits. A new video in the universe starts with them, also when someone else makes it in your public universe. Add more from your library, create new ones, or remove one. Here you can also change Who can be in this universe's videos?. Only you see how each one fits.
- Characters the AI suggests: up to three side characters from your Lore, under Characters in the Cast. Select Add to cast to create one in your library and link it to this universe; it costs the same credits as creating a character yourself, shown on the button. Select Dismiss to drop one. Only you see these. Fill it in again from this gives you new suggestions.
- Your original description: what you wrote when you made the universe. Edit it and select Fill it in again from this to let the AI write the public description, Lore, Rules, Art direction and Audience again. Nothing changes until you select Save. Older universes do not have this part.
- Settings: the style, narration and audio, video, permissions and publishing options. Select Settings to open them.
Select Save to keep your changes. Changes apply to new videos. A video you already made keeps the version it started with.
Create a saved character
- Open Characters. The page is called Characters, Locations & Objects.
- Select Create New Character.
- Choose Upload Image to start from a picture, or Create Manually to start from a description.
- Fill in the name, description, appearance, and clothing. Be specific. "A short red coat and round glasses" works better than "an interesting outfit." You can also write the character's Personality and How they talk. Both are optional.
- Choose a voice if the character will speak.
- Add a reference sheet if you want one. It helps keep the character's look the same from shot to shot. Basic and Premium sheets show their cost in the app.
Check the result before you use the character in a series.
Change a saved character
- Open Characters, select the character, then select Edit.
- Change the Name, Handle, Description, Personality or How they talk, and select Save. The handle is the
@name your scripts use. It follows the name until you type a handle of your own. - To change how the character looks, go to Look and choose Describe a change or Redraw, then select Change look. The price shows on the button.
Each save keeps a version. To go back, open Versions and select Restore. Videos you already made keep the version they used. To use the new one in a video, open the video in the editor, open Project settings, select Newer versions, then Use it here.
Use the character in each story
- On the creation screen, select the saved character.
- In the idea field, you can also use Mention your characters and pick one from the list. This adds it to the video.
- With a script, check the character mapping and use the correct handles. See the script guide.
- Keep the identity details the same when you want continuity.
If a result looks wrong, check the selected character, its reference sheet, and the visual style before you generate again. For spoken lines, also check the character's voice. See Use voices, audio, and captions.
