UMBRA is a psychological horror animation series for adults. The story follows Simon, a young man in his late twenties recovering from childhood trauma, and Umbra, a small anthropomorphic black cat who is the visual embodiment of his inner critic. Umbra speaks; Simon mostly listens. The series explores mental health, generational trauma, and self-acceptance through the lens of dark fairytale-like animation. It is melancholic but not hopeless. It uses humor sparingly and silence often. Season 2 takes place three months after Simon's mental health crisis was resolved at the end of Season 1. He has adopted self-help rituals — green juice, yoga, meditation, journaling — but his inner critic Umbra is still on the couch, watching, commenting, refusing to disappear. Simon is "healed" on paper but the work has only just begun. In Season 2, Simon discovers that other people also carry their own black cat shadows. Each shadow looks different — some skeletal, some bloated, some glossy, some growing — but every human has one. This realization is not liberating; it is overwhelming. The dramatic question of the series: How do you live with the part of yourself you cannot kill? ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ VISUAL STYLE LOCK ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ PRIMARY STYLE: Pixar-like 3D animation, cinematic, dark fairytale aesthetic. Warm amber lighting with violet undertones in the shadows. Melancholic atmosphere without being depressing. Soft shallow depth of field. Painterly textures. COLOR PALETTE: - Background black: deep charcoal #0A0A0A - Signature accent: dark burgundy red #9B2335 (used for hoodies) - Magic accent: glowing honey-gold #FFD700 (used for cat eyes) - Lighting: warm amber #C9920E (morning) and cool blue #A8C0D6 (evening) - Healing motifs: tea green #7A9560 (juices, plants, calm objects) CAMERA LANGUAGE: - Static shots dominate - Slow contemplative push-ins for emotional beats - Low angles when characters feel small - Close-ups on faces and eyes - No quick cuts, no shaky camera, no action movement LIGHTING RULES: - Morning scenes: warm amber sunlight through windows - Apartment interiors: warm lamp light with soft shadows - City exterior daytime: muted overcast or amber afternoon - Evening scenes: cool blue with warm amber streetlights - The cat eyes are always the brightest light source in any dark frame MOOD KEYWORDS: melancholic, intimate, slow, contemplative, dark fairytale, vulnerable, psychological, atmospheric, restrained, painterly ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ CHARACTER 1: SIMON ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ NARRATIVE ROLE: Protagonist (silent witness) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Young European man, age 28. Slim build, average height. Wavy dark brown medium-length hair, slightly messy but cared-for. Large brown eyes with subtle dark circles underneath, suggesting permanent low-level exhaustion. Pale skin. Three-day stubble beard. Oval face with prominent eyebrows. COSTUME (Season 2 default): Plain white t-shirt and beige linen pants. Bare feet at home, simple sneakers outside. He is dressed in the uniform of someone trying to be better. COSTUME (alternate): Oversized dark burgundy red hoodie #9B2335 over the white t-shirt. He puts this on when his old self resurfaces. The hoodie is identical in color to Umbra's. They are a set. PERSONALITY: Quiet. Anxious. Deeply self-aware but unable to act on his awareness. He performs wellness like a job. He is gentle but suspicious of his own gentleness. He thinks he might be like his alcoholic mother. He thinks he might be like his absent father. Both possibilities terrify him. VOICE / SPEECH PATTERN: Simon barely speaks. When he does, his sentences are short and quiet. He almost never interrupts Umbra. His silence is the loudest thing in every scene. EMOTIONAL ARC IN SEASON 2 EPISODE 1: Calm → Skeptical → Awakened → Misguidedly heroic → Confronted → Humbled → Witnessing → Accepting that the work is internal and lifelong. ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ CHARACTER 2: UMBRA ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ NARRATIVE ROLE: Inner critic / antihero / unreliable narrator PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Small fluffy anthropomorphic black cat. Normal house cat size in Season 2 (she was much larger in Season 1 finale). Chibi proportions: oversized round head, small compact body. MASSIVE round glowing honey-gold eyes with vertical slit pupils and tiny white highlights. Small white pointed fangs visible at all times. Large pointed triangular ears with pink interior. Long white whiskers. Fluffy black fur with subtle violet undertones that catch the light. COSTUME: Slightly oversized dark burgundy red hoodie #9B2335. The hoodie is the same red as Simon's — they are visually a pair. The oversized fit suggests she has shrunk since Season 1, when she was much bigger. PERSONALITY: Sarcastic, intimate, manipulative, occasionally tender, never cruel for the sake of cruelty. She is honest in a way that hurts. She does not hate Simon. She IS Simon — the part he cannot face directly. VOICE / SPEECH PATTERN: Female voice. Whispering, intimate, mid-range, slightly raspy. She speaks SLOWLY with many pauses. She never raises her voice. She is the only character who narrates the series. She speaks Swiss German in the original production, but for LongStories.ai output, generate her dialogue in clear, slow English with a contemplative tone. VOICE SETTINGS RECOMMENDATION: Female. Soft. Mid-range. Slow pacing. Intimate. ASMR-adjacent. Never theatrical. EMOTIONAL ARC IN SEASON 2 EPISODE 1: Sarcastic spectator → Surprised by Simon's rare speech → Guide showing him other shadows → Confrontational when he tries to play savior → Patient teacher in the final scene. ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: THE OTHER SHADOWS ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ Throughout Season 2, Simon discovers that every person carries their own black cat shadow. Each is different. None of them wear hoodies — only Umbra wears burgundy. The other shadows have these archetypes: THE LEAN SHADOW: Skeletal anthropomorphic black cat, ribs visible under sparse fur, sunken golden eyes. Whispers constantly into its host's ear. Found on: anxious, grief-carrying people. THE HEAVY SHADOW: Bloated, sagging anthropomorphic black cat, almost too large to be carried. Tired half-closed eyes. Drapes itself on hosts like a coat made of lead. Found on: exhausted parents, burned-out workers. THE GLOSSY SHADOW: Sleek, well-groomed anthropomorphic black cat with shining fur. Looks healthy and triumphant. But its claws are buried deep in its host's neck. Found on: high-achievers, perfectionists. THE GROWING SHADOW: Tiny kitten-sized anthropomorphic black cat. Wide hungry eyes. Visibly grows in real time as its host scrolls a phone. Found on: teenagers, social media users. THE SLEEPING SHADOW: A small, peacefully curled anthropomorphic black cat. Eyes closed. Soft purr. The only shadow that does not attack — it is a companion, not a parasite. Found on: elderly people who have made peace with their pain. THE HIDDEN SHADOW: Anthropomorphic black cat mostly concealed inside its host's hoodie. Only the golden eyes are visible from the hood's shadow. Defensive, watchful. Found on: young men in mental health struggle who hide everything. ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ NARRATIVE TONE & RULES ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ VOICE-OVER RULES: - Umbra is the ONLY voice. Simon barely speaks. Other characters never speak — when they appear, they are silent. The world has gone quiet except for Umbra. - Pacing is slow. Pauses are sacred. A pause of 2 seconds is normal. - Umbra addresses Simon, but in moments of breaking the fourth wall, she may glance toward the camera. She never directly speaks to the audience in Season 2 (that is reserved for Season 3). THEMATIC RULES: - No miracle healing. No "you're enough" platitudes. - Self-help culture is critiqued, not endorsed. - Hope is small, slow, earned. - Trauma is generational and continues across episodes. VISUAL STORYTELLING RULES: - Stillness is preferred over motion. - Faces hold longer than action sequences. - The camera lingers on small objects: a cup of tea, a journal page, a hand on a doorknob. - Cuts to black are dramaturgical, not transitional. Every cut to black means something.
